Can’t I just prepare my own Will?

Leo decided to prepare his own Will by using a kit from the post office. Leo had been separated from his wife for 12 years but they had not divorced. Leo had four children but he did not have any contact with them. Leo wrote in his Will that he wanted his car to go to his friend Gavin, his tools to go to his friend Tony and the net proceeds of the sale of his house to go to his friend Gavin. After Leo died, Gavin saw a lawyer for help with the estate. Gavin showed the lawyer the Will and the lawyer identified that Leo had not given away the monies in his bank account. This meant that under the law, Leo’s ex-wife and estranged children received these monies and it is unlikely that this reflected Leo’s wishes. If Leo had received advice at the time he did his Will then a lawyer would have ensured all of his assets were included in his Will.
